Kerry's Blunder
The Shadow Campaign is by definition a campaign predicated on risk minimization; but I agree with David Gergen that Kerry (or whoever was responsible) made a huge error in leaking out the fact that Kerry was semi-seriously considering John McCain as a vice-presidential nominee. All that floating/confirming those rumors could do was make Kerry's eventual choice, if McCain didn't accept, appear to be a second choice. Kerry stood to gain nothing at all unless McCain had been actually willing to join the ticket, and risked giving ammunition to the Republicans. Well now he's made a fine choice in John Edwards, and the Republicans are very intelligently countering by running ads featuring McCain. Bonehead move, JFK.
