A Word Or Two On Darfur
I should have been blogging about this story much sooner. Via Instapundit, here's a good summary.
What is the difference between Sudan in 2004 and Rwanda in 1994? Ten years, for one thing, and the fact that both sides are Muslim. Not much else, as far as I can tell. President Clinton's failure to intervene in the Rwandan genocide (actually, he sent Madelaine Albright to the UN to support the French, who were supporting the Hutu mass-murderers) was the greatest moral catastrophe of his administration, and you'd be hard pressed to come up with any comparable example of an American president having the means to stop a genocide and failing to do so purely out of political cowardice---the Somalia disaster being fresh in Clinton's mind.
True, the Nixon administration flirted with genocidal regimes and often helped them to carry out their atrocities, but I don't think anyone could argue plausibly that Nixon was capable of discerning right from wrong, let alone choosing the option he knew to be wrong.
