Speaking Of People Who Will Not Be Fooled...
...Glenn Reynolds posts an e-mail from somebody who "knows" why Tommy Franks' book, American Soldier, is not getting a lot of attention, despite being No. 1 on the NYT best-seller list: because it's not anti-Bush (of course!). I wonder exactly what sufficient attention would look like. He's making the chat-show circuit. He's become the first general since Wesley Clark to become a pundit. Maybe the reader is concerned that Tommy Franks' book hasn't been reviewed by the New York Times. Let me offer an alternative theory as to why that might be. Maybe, just maybe---and please don't think I'm unpatriotic for suggesting this---a general + his possible ghost writer aren't literary geniuses, and this book isn't quite up to the standards of Grant's memoirs.
Anyway, old Glennglenn has his own thoughts on his reader's theory: "I hate to buy into a theory as seemingly simplistic and cynical as 'if it makes Bush look good, it'll be buried' -- but I can't deny its explanatory power." Who, precisely, has buried Franks? If he hasn't already, will he not complete a full circuit of appearances on Hardball, the O'Reilly Factor, Scarborough Country, Larry King Live, etc. etc.?
Explanatory power? Does Reynolds know how many anti-Bush books are around? How many does he think have gotten a full recommendation from a Times reviewer?
