For The Defense
New YDN column today. Here are my thoughts re: Larry Summers and the terrible things he said. I have a feeling there's going to be some hate mail over this. God knows I've worked hard enough at this---it's about time for a serious threat.
Anyway, money quote (if I'm allowed to say so):
Gender equality, which we rightfully strive for, is not the same thing as gender identity, which is impossible. Recognition of that fact is not sexism and not misogyny. Though it might not have occurred to them yet, the actual enemy of Summers' shocked accusers is reality.

You claim that liberals aren't tough enough to face reality, but really, what kind of shocking re-interpretation of reality are you holding out for? It seems to me that the most, if anything, that a scientic consensus could demonstrate is that men are genetically programed to be _slightly_ better at math than women. So what? That potential conclusion is so vague and so narrow and so contestable as to be meaningless in shaping our understanding of reality. We would still view the basic mathematical capacities of men and women as equal.
You're using the Summers outcry as an opportunity to critique political correctness as intellectual weakness. But I think you overstate the potential intellectual work that liberals are hiding from.
