Out Of The Closet And Out Of Trenton
As you've no doubt heard by now, the governor of my home state has resigned effective November 15, and revealed that he is gay and has had an affair with a former state employee. His homosexuality obviously shouldn't be an issue, but we have to face the unpleasant reality that Bill Clinton's presidency would not have survived if his affairs had been with men. [Is any of this a consolation to Gary Hart?--ed.] I guess that the recent ballot initiative in Missouri and California state supreme court decision are even better evidence that the nation has quite a distance to go in terms of acceptance of homosexuals.
The real story, pace Atrios, is not that McGreevey is gay, but that his administration is plagued by corruption scandals and that his ex-lover is about to sue him for sexual harrassment. Those, I think, are good reasons to resign.
[Atrios's original post on the subject had nothing about the backstory, just "Wow. 'I am a gay American.'"--ed.]
