Rove's Gambit
I'm sort of shocked that nobody has made this point explicitly yet, at least as far as I know, so let me be the first:
Karl Rove estimated that Bush's victory depended on turning out 4 million evangelical Christian voters who didn't vote in 2000. The number one issue for Bush voters was "moral values," which is code for "goddamn faggots." In 2000, Bush lost by 500,000 votes. In 2004, he won by 3,500,000.
Smart guy, that Rove.
